Back from: Mission Springsteen. As you know, in matters such as that with one as that of the “Boss.”Long story short: thank you to all the people of Asbury Park, Bradley Beach and Belmar New Jersey who were fantastically fantastic hosts for Mission Springsteen—a secret mission about which I hope to be able to speak in an open manner. For now, suffice to say: Bruce is “totally fine with” my site and the use of his songs on the site—as long as I do not start publishing lyric and chord sheets.While waiting around to meet Bruce and his most pleasant and friendly entourage (more like good friends than a “posse”), I had time to prepare these charts which feature two things: the two 3-D graphs and the linear graph show Daniel Powter performing Bad Day, an iTunes download, alone with a piano accompaniment only. As you can see from the chart on the top which compares the two performances: one is a sequencer in repetitive time, the other in Powter’s head—pure live time.Is one better than the other? No. Is one way more “pure” than the other—hey, isn’t a metronome cheating, didn’t Powter obviously cheat in the “rock” version??? NO! Playing with a sequencer is as tricky and difficult and musically demanding as playing live, and those musicians who can play either way—Metheny, Mays, Collins, Gabriel, Bowie, The Stones, Dave Matthews band, Clapton, Townsend, John, Sting, Springsteen—these people make it. There used to be a commercial in the 1970s pitching Memorex Brand cassette recording tape. The slogan, after a recording of an opera singer was so well duplicated on the cassette that the reproduction of the high notes shatters a wine glass: “Is it live, or it Memorex?”As per the metronome, the best bands and musicians, a few mentioned above, have musicians who have all trained themselves to have fun playing on a sequenced track or have fun just playing live—and what happens is is that often the sequencer frees up the playing, and such recording sounds more Live tan a real live recording than is trying to Stay on Beat.These are the mean frequencies for the acoustic version of Bad Day, calibrated as my team’s undisclosed vehicle passed the Cavalry Baptist Churchon E Street in Asbury Park. 1) the method which which the tempo chart was synthesized is published all over the internet in general, and if you are serious about what you comment on, and you seriously doubt me - Heck, if you just want to make your own measurements of tempo, come back and prove me wrong, PLEASE SO DO! 2) when knowledge is power, as it is, and noise pollution is never going away, knowledge of and familiarity with what speed is telling you about the REAL emotional content behind a song, such knowledge as above is priceless. Once you know, for example, the tempo of “WE WILL ROCK YOU” and what it implies, the reason that it has been stomped at events for over 25 years, you may just get “what it means.” I say this as respectfully as I can, as your lazy question would have been simply deleted by anyone who did no t have confidence that their (in this case my) conjecture is a truth.

Music for Picture never let is know that they were going to give us a feature. So said, anytime someone really *gets* what we are all about makes all the work we put into the meanspeed conjecture worth it.
They make the point for us that we cannot make on our own, something we encourage everyone who reads our material on meanspeed.com and Wordpress’ meanspeedmusic.com: that tempo analysis sounds dry. in reality, it is the wettest thing going. As we have preached and tried to prove and begged for feedback as that on Music For Picture, when you learn yoru favorite speeds, understand the territoroes of speed, you will be able to control your mind in a new way. This is not for everyone, howeverm for lovers of contemporary music, it is the one of the best psychological tries one can make. Chemicals? No. Inflated psychiatry bills (a redindant concept)? Nope. Just an investement of your time in learning this meanspeed conjecture will be giving many a new power of mind that has the abiliy to soothe and enthuse. The most you will be shelling out for money is an occassional 99¢ download.

Jennifer O’Connor was in the studio this week recording vocals for a special project with Peter. She brought a copy of here new Matador release “Here With Me”. Look for it’s public release in the late Summer. We’re all very excited for JOC!
The Berliner Philarmoiker has taken a cue from ‘Guitar Hero’ and are offering people the chance to compete online composer Camille Saint-Saens. Use your mouse and to control the bow. It’s pretty tricky and the sound tends more toward the avanr garde.

I came across this amazing movie the other night. It’s a 1962 version of ‘Othello’ set in England using jazz musicans instead of royalty. Charlie Mingus, Dave Brubeck (and many other American musicans) are all “members of the court” . They’re having a big jam session in the background as bandleader “Johnny Cousin” plants the seeds of jealousy in the mind of a more prominent bandleader “Rex” about the fidelity of his retired singer wife “Delia Lane”. If you like Shakespeare and jazz this is a must see. Also performing at the “session” were Keith Christie, Bert Courtley, John Dankworth, Ray Dempsey, Allen Gantley, Paul Harris, Aurelius Rex, Tubby Hayes, Geoffrey Holder, Patrick McGoohan, Johnnie Cousin, Keith Michell, Barry Morgan, Kenny Napper and Colin Purbrook. -Peter

Os Mutantes for Shell September 5, 2007
Os Mutantes were formed in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1966 by brothers Arnaldo Baptista (bass, keyboards and vocals) and Sérgio Dias (guitars and vocals) and lead singer Rita Lee. They released two albums heavily influenced by the Brazilian Tropicália movement, which blended Psychedelic Rock with other forms of art. Beck has sited them as a large influnece & David Byrne is a big fan. Take a look at some of their strange ads for Shell Oil.

In 1951 Ingmar Bergman signed a contract with the Sunlight Corporation to make nine commercials for Bris soap . Each commercial had to contain one of two slogans: “Perspiration alone does not smell; it is the skin bacteria that cause the smell when they come in contact with perspiration” or “Bris kills the bacteria—no bacteria—no smell.” Bergman had fun making the commercials, though he had some difficulty fitting the Bris text into the films.

Project Jenny Project Jan, the duo of Jeremy Haines and MFP’s own Sammy Rubin, have returned from a short tour with Fujiya & Miyagi, during which they brought their alternatingly quirky and bombastic sound to new fans in the Northeast. “An incredible experience,” said Haines. The veteran rockers then ploughed through three of their ‘hits’. However the real centrepiece of the performance came before the closing ‘Big Bottom’ , before which ‘David St Hubbins’ introduced “every bass player in the known universe…”.
Joining the band were Foo Fighters’ Nate Mendell, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Bloc Party’s Gordon Moakes and Madonna’s bass player and producer Stuart Price. However, Metallica frontman James Hetfield and the entire Beastie Boys also made it onto the stage to join in the fun.

The event was part of the summer-long Celebrate Brooklyn festival, which offers free concerts a few nights a week. Filmmaker Marlo Poras and composer Ian Kane were in the studio in February to record score for Run Granny Run, winner of the 2007 SXSW Film Festival Audience Award for Feature Documentaries. The film follows 94-year-old Doris ‘Granny D’ Haddock in her grassroots New Hampshire campaign for U.S. Senate. Ms. Poras’ first film, Mai’s America, won the Audience Award for Feature Documentaries at SXSW in 2002.

Microsoft, IBM, Google do all the work, Apple repackages it in a fancy yet smarmy way, like a nasty version of Sony products. As if: Sony parts did not have integration. Jobs came up with an iTunes system that is a scandal: you may only download once, despite their owning a copy of a song you *already bought but was lost on your hard drive because the new Tiger system blew up your "old" data, like you iTunes Library. The most ethical company I know is Audible.com, a company that sells books on recording by excellent readers at a fair price with enormous selections of everything. I bought Charlie Wilson's War, a 24 hour book in 2004, and I had erased it from my hard-drive for room, and wanted to download it before checking out the movie. Easily done: I go to the site--->My Library---->Download. Voila. You own it for life - or at least for the life of the company. And the only book club that was acceptable to Apple was Audible, and that price *should* have been steep in Audible's favor as they are every bit as ethical as iTunes is not. Of course, conspiracy theorists like myself if I've been outside too long would say that they are really the sane company, and in the future, to maintain revenue, with people revolting in masses against iTunes, Apple will bend to the same rule: If you ACCOUNT buys an album or a song, as long as you can prove that you have held the account from which you bought the music, you can download. Those rules of greed are obscene - as virtually all that is paid for mainly out of a morality play, as p2p is so easy, gets *punished* while Dr. Limewire has made $5,000 in DVD sales of the last concert ever by The Beatles.
Take that out a step way further. On his iTunes video 80 GB iPod, which is always breaking down - look out of it is not because then it's just going to die *completely* one day and the Apple Store twenty-something will say, "I'm sorry, that's what happens." Anyway, the iPod has an absolutely fantastic 200 lap stop watch on it that records two-hundred consecutive laps - a thousand calibrations on that iPod, with great software function and ease of use with music (I measure songs on the train - I was terribly excited about this watch. it even went out to the THIRD decimal place in seconds: while Nike, Seiko, Timex, and , well, everyone else stop at hundredths of seconds, the iPod does thousandths! One problem, two laughable results. The problem is that the lap button is in the middle of the iPod and goes down a distance of [X] number of diopters and hits “lap” - yet that button is raised and horribly inconsistent, so the problem is:
1) The time measurements are not even reliable to the 1ooths. I have many $10 watches that are far superior in a straight one lap digital count - the watch function does not work properly–nor can it, lest it is a touch screen version (like I am not going to buy it!); and
2) The idea of being unreliable out to the *thousandth* of a second is as absurd as if: you were 2-10 minutes to an 8 o’clock curtain, and upon being asked the time a man said: “It is seven hours, 56 minutes 44.78 seconds, or 3 minutes 56.22 seconds until 8!” where that man’s watch was good to go as far as the time being within 30 seconds of 7:57, but the “.78 seconds” is vanity and silliness and misleading - and Jobs sells this. Shameful. A Seiko stop watch is to an iTunes stopwatch what Air Force One is to that piece of crap John Denver flew into that mountain or even the Piper that Kennedy killed 2 sisters and himself, many say because he was a lousy pilot, his instrument rating not assured. And we all buy Steve Jobs because Bill Gates is supposed to be so “evil.” Wrong. Just like Google. Google is no more evil than MySpace or Facebook are “good.”
