"Synchronicity II" - The Police - mean speed=159.8 beats per minute - meanspeed music theory view, pt I

On August 5th the Police opened their show with the song called "Synchronicity II."

Meanspeed Music will be examining the song in detail in four ways in a four part series.

In each analysis, the song will be broken in four different ways in one manner. Specifically, in today's post, as with all the others with Synchronicity II, we will show contiguous measurements of 10 beat groups. Today, we will show the measurement beginning on beat number 2 - the first backbeat. In parts 2-4 of this series, the measurements will begin on beat 1, beat 3 and beat 4 respectively. Each time, we will be able to see the degree to which measuring the speed of this song beginning on a different beat affects the overall speed graph.

We have no idea what the results will be.

Speed Summary, Synchronicity II from beat 2, the first backbeat -
beats measured=760
mean time=4 minutes, 45.4 seconds
mean speed=159.8 beats per minute
average beat=376 milliseconds
mean phase=2.66 cycles per second
corresponding pitch=681.6 hertz, 57 cents>E5=659.3 hertz, 43 cents>F5=698.5 hertz.

A Day In The Life - The Beatles, Meanspeed=80.4 bpm - Speed In Space Movie #1, created by Meanspeed Music

After a last minute invitation from the Independent Toronto Film Scrum, representing Meanspeed Music Sarah Jane Bristol and I decided to drive up to beautiful Toronto and have a go at making our Speed in Space graphics come alive.

"Come on up! Within a week--heck, I've seen that site of yours--we can add a little entertainment. You need us man! We need you!"

I say to you: can one pass that up? No. So: Sarah Jane and I got in the car and made it up here just in time for the opening ceremonies, including a short on how Lance Armstrong warms up before he brushes *his* teeth in morning. Note: when the Lance short goes public, well, it is a piece of art, slice of sport, and a tooth-brushing style so innovative as to demand that of a song of A Day In The Life to illustrate. Have the song on your pc or mac? Experiment!

Know what you are thinking: why a popular song when you are trying to illustrate A DAY IN THE LIFE by the Beatles? Answer: Copyright, Michael Jackson and Vaseline® - not necessarily in that order.

This is a test run, y'all - so your comments are most highly cherished.

All the best from the Film Scrum - here in polite yet arrogant Toronto,
Ian Schneider

Part 4, Conclusion of Four-Way Calibration of "Synchronicity II"- The Police - meanspeed=159.7 beats per minute

The graphs on this page are a conclusion of a Meanspeed test on itself: what kind of charts would we get if we started on the one, two, three or four of the song Synchronicity II by The Police.
